POT HOLING

Once underground utilities or services are located with an electronic service locator we provide a safe and efficient way to safely expose and locate services, this allows for mechanical type excavation to proceed without damage to utilities.  With vacuum excavation we can cut trenches in locations difficult to access allow for repairs or installation of existing or new services.

The Pot Holing Process

1. Site Preparation: The work area is clearly marked and secured to ensure safety for workers and the public. Utility plans are reviewed to identify potential hazards.

2. Initial Dig: A small hole (typically 300mm to 500mm in diameter) is marked out directly above the suspected location of the underground service.

3. Soil Loosening: The operator uses the truck’s water or air lance to gently break up the soil in the marked area. Water is most commonly used, but air can be preferable in certain ground conditions or when working near sensitive cables.

4. Vacuum Excavation: The loosened soil and debris are vacuumed up through a large-diameter hose and deposited into the truck’s holding tank. This process continues until the buried utility is exposed.

5. Inspection and Documentation: Once the utility is exposed, it is inspected for condition and accurately located. Photographs and measurements are taken for records.

6. Backfilling: After inspection or repair, the hole is backfilled with suitable material and the surface is restored to its original condition, ensuring safety and minimal disruption.

Benefits of Using Vacuum Excavation for Pot Holing

• Enhanced Safety: Minimises the risk of damaging underground assets, reducing the chance of service outages, injuries, or costly repairs.

• Non-Destructive: Unlike mechanical digging, vacuum excavation is gentle on utilities and the surrounding environment.

• Efficiency: Pot holing with a vacuum excavation truck is often faster and cleaner than manual digging, especially in compacted soils or urban areas.

• Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of soil types and utility locations, including areas with limited access.
